Ceremonies and rituals - platforms for acknowledging the milestones in our lives - have always been a part of the human experience. While everyone is familiar with the way we use weddings, funerals, baptisms, and birthdays to celebrate or grieve, a new form of ritual is emerging in modern culture. People often find that traditional ceremonies, tied to the larger framework of church or synagogue, have become more routine and less spontaneous, sometimes even rigid. In the absence of real meaning, we are apt to feel a great sense of loss at times of transition in our lives. As a result, many ministers today are helping people co-create personalized ceremonies designed to not only honor change, but also to foster it.
